Michael S. Bahk, MD
Dr. Michael Bahk graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, with a Bachelor of Arts in English studies. More specifically, he was part of a select group of students with a concentration in Writing and was awarded the Edwin L. Shuman Essay Award. He was also part of the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME) and subsequently attended Northwestern University’s medical school. He graduated as one of the top of his class with Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) distinctions. He was also awarded the American Academy of Neurology Medical Student Prize for Excellence for medical distinction upon graduation.
Following medical school, he completed his internship and orthopedic residency training at one of the nation’s top hospitals, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, working for five years under some of the country’s leading surgeons. He has an interest in shoulder, elbow and knee research and published numerous papers in journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine and Journal of Knee Surgery.
After residency, Dr. Bahk completed the prestigious Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute and trained under some of the nation’s founding and pioneering arthroscopic surgeons. He continued to write book chapters and present shoulder research at national meetings such as the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) in addition to covering local high school sports teams.
To further his understanding of the shoulder, Dr. Bahk recently completed a second fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow surgery in Philadelphia, PA with the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University. This was a one year dedicated program in arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder and elbow including shoulder arthroplasty, reverse arthroplasty, instability surgery, fracture care and tendon transfers. He worked with world renown shoulder and elbow surgeons and was one of three physicians to receive a $45,000 Orthopaedic Research and Education Fund (OREF) grant to understand venous thromboembolic disease and upper extremity arthroplasty. He is excited about this research and hopes it will lead to better patient care.
Dr. Bahk grew up all over the nation including New York, Michigan, Texas and even briefly overseas. His parents still reside overseas, and he has siblings in New York and San Francisco. He appreciates his broad and diverse background growing up all over the world and training throughout the nation. He is excited to settle down in California and take care of patients in Simi Valley and Van Nuys.
In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, running and spending time with family and friends. |
