About this Website

Dr. Snyder grew up in Idaho. He attended Oregon State University on a football scholarship, where he became interested in Sports Medicine.

He then pursued that field as a medical student at the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland, where he completed his M.D. in 1973. His surgical internship was performed at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California. After three years in military service in Germany, Dr. Snyder returned to complete a residency program specializing in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Southern California and Orthopedic Hospital in Los Angeles.

Dr. Snyder became interested in shoulder work early in his career, and began doing shoulder arthroscopy. He has been instrumental in the development of many new techniques for shoulder arthroscopy and has invented numerous surgical instruments and materials which are used routinely in modern shoulder surgery. He has also been instrumental in many research protocols evaluating various surgical techniques for the shoulder, including rotator cuff repairs, surgery for dislocating shoulders and rotator cuff injuries, and imaging techniques of the shoulder such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging studies.

Dr. Snyder founded the International Shoulder Arthroscopy Study Group, is on the Board of Directors of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Association. He travels throughout the world demonstrating surgical techniques and teaching shoulder arthroscopy and reconstructive surgery.

Outside of the office, Dr. Snyder enjoys playing golf, water and snow skiing, tennis, fishing, and creating educational shoulder video tapes.

Stephen J. Snyder, M.D. is available to see patients in the Van Nuys office.
