Joseph Burns, MD is a fellowship-trained experienced sports medicine surgeon and one of the nations leading orthopedic specialists, with extensive knowledge in shoulder surgery, arthroscopic reconstruction of the knee (ACL surgery) and sports medicine. In addition to performing advanced surgical procedures, Dr. Burns provides a full compliment of non-surgical options for musculoskeletal issues, including platelet-rich plasma injections.

Dr. Burns has a special expertise in the shoulder. He has helped to develop some of the most innovative surgical techniques available, including minimally invasive arthroscopic alternatives to some of the shoulder's most difficult problems, such as rotator cuff tears, shoulder dislocations, shoulder arthritis and shoulder replacement issues. In the complex world of shoulder replacement surgery, Dr. Burns is an expert in using cutting edge virtual reality computer programming to individualize surgical treatment to each patient. Using advanced 3D imaging, this process allows him to evaluate and closely measure each patient’s own specific anatomy and then create patient-specific instruments to be used in surgery. This process has been shown to improve patient outcomes after shoulder replacement.

Despite being in a private practice at SCOI, without protected academic time, Dr. Burns makes the time to teach and lecture globally on important issues related to orthopedic procedures and sports injury management. He has published and continues to publish dozens of original research papers and review articles. He has written many textbook chapters, and has also co-authored a textbook for orthopedic surgeons entitled “Shoulder Arthroscopy” (Lippincott, 2014). He is also an educator of orthopedic specialists, having trained over 75 sports medicine fellows who are currently practicing around the world. He is regarded as one of the most skillful surgeons in the world and is an invited member of the prestigious American Shoulder & Elbow Society (ASES), which requires a commitment to furthering the field of advanced surgery, and has served as chairman for over a dozen international specialty orthopedic surgical skills courses.

Just as importantly, Dr. Burns is absolutely committed to being the best father, husband and doctor he can be. He believes in being honest and compassionate in all endeavors; in the office, in the operating room and at home with his family.

Dr. Burns went to Yale University where he played on both the football and baseball teams, earning the C. Gilbert Shepherd Award for leadership and interest in Yale Athletics. He then attended Georgetown University Medical School, graduating with honors, followed by the University of Connecticut for orthopedic residency, where he scored in the top 1% of residents on the orthopedic in-training exam. He completed formal training with a sports and shoulder fellowship at SCOI’s own Southern California Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Burns is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the California Orthopaedic Association, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Shoulder & Elbow Society. Since 2012, his peers have annually selected Dr. Burns as a SuperDoctor in the Los Angeles area.

Dr. Burns is available to see patients at the Porter Ranch, Valencia and Van Nuys offices.

“I recently hurt my knee at work. No big deal. I thought I would just go through the motions and get back on my feet. After some questionable care at the treating facility, I fought with the insurance carrier and had my case transferred to Southern California Orthopedic Institute. I soon found out my knee was worse than I thought. Dr. Burns recommended surgery based on a torn meniscus, along with a bone fracture, and a couple of other painful problems. These problems made it difficult at best to walk and move around. After undergoing arthroscopic surgery with Dr. Burns, I was up and walking within 2 days. By the 4th day, I got rid of the crutches and cane and was walking unassisted. It has now been a little over 2 weeks since the surgery and I now can do things with my grandkids again. I even took them to Disneyland and was able to walk the entire park with only minor discomfort. Thanks to Dr. Burns and the staff at Southern California Orthopedic Institute, I am well on my way to a full recovery!”
