Current High School Concussion Regulations

On May 7, 2010, the California Interscholastic Federation or CIF passed Bylaw 313 requiring that a student-athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from competition at that time for the remainder of the day.

This student-athlete, who has been removed from play, may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed healthcare provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and receives written clearance to return to play from that healthcare provider.

Licensed healthcare providers authorized to evaluate and treat student-athletes suspected of sustaining concussions and/or brain injuries are limited to a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO).

The sports medicine doctors trained and experienced in assessing and treating concussions in student-athletes at Southern California Orthopedic Institute include Dr. Andrew Blecher and Dr. Richard Spelts.
