SCORE & Wells Fargo "Play It Safe" Concussion Care Program
SCORE, Southern California Orthopedic Research & Education Center, recently partnered with Wells Fargo's "Play It Safe" Concussion Care insurance program to improve concussion care and better protect our area's athletes.
Through SCORE's donation of $500 to 10 area high schools' varsity football teams (totaling $5,000), to fund the "Play It Safe" Concussion Care program, all eligible athletes have access to ImPACT, the program's neurocognitive assessment and post-concussion testing tool, regardless of the athlete's family healthcare insurance or income.
ImPACT is a computerized neurocognitive assessment tool currently utilized for concussion management in professional athletes of the NHL, NBA, MLB, and NFL.
Using the ImPACT system, our sports medicine and concussion doctors evaluate athletes for memory, concentration, attention, visual-motor and reaction time deficits to establish a baseline measure and determine additional risk for re-injury prior to releasing an athlete back to play. Currently, our Concussion Center at Southern California Orthopedic Institute is one of only three centers in the greater Los Angeles area with Certified ImPACT Consultants (CIC).
Through the use of ImPACT, local athletic departments and our medical experts can better assess an athlete's injury and their ability to return to play following a concussion.
It is with this initiative that SCORE and the sports medicine doctors at SCOI hope to help more athletes at risk and in need of concussion care and management.
