Dr. Harpreet Bawa to Perform San Fernando Valley's First Mako Robotic Outpatient Anterior Hip Replacement

On Dec. 9, fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon Dr. Harpreet Bawa of Southern California Orthopedic Institute will perform the first MAKO anterior hip replacement and first outpatient MAKO anterior hip replacement in the San Fernando Valley at the Center for Orthopedic Surgery at 6815 Noble Ave., Suite 400. Patients seeking specialized care for their joint pain are encouraged to call (818) 901-6600 to schedule a safe appointment with Dr. Bawa at the practice's Simi Valley office at 3605 Alamo St., Suite 200; in Thousand Oaks at 375 Rolling Oaks Drive, Suite 210; or in Porter Ranch at 19950 Rinaldi St., Suite 100.

With specialized training and extensive experience using Stryker’s innovative Mako robotic-arm technology, Dr. Bawa has completed over 1,000 total joint replacements using the system to date. The Mako robotic-arm system creates a 3D model of the hip or knee joint which is then used to create a patient-specific pre-operative plan. Then during surgery, the robotic-arm assists with execution of that plan while protecting vital structures and minimizing soft-tissue injury.

Dr. Bawa is proud to provide this innovative procedure in the specialized outpatient setting of the Center for Orthopedic Surgery. Performing this procedure as an outpatient provides direct benefit to patients, including:

  • Increased patient satisfaction by allowing them to recover in the comfort of their own home.
  • Significantly reduced risk of infection as compared to a hospital environment.
  • Substantial cost savings due to the elimination of overnight stay.

"I am proud to offer robotic-assisted total joint replacement using this incredible system to patients in our state-of-the-art outpatient facility, the Center for Orthopedic Surgery," says Dr. Bawa. "Robotic-arm assistance joint replacement allows me to minimize soft tissue injury and optimize component position which translates into less pain and faster recovery for patients."

Dr. Bawa completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at The University of Chicago. Following his residency, he underwent additional specialty training through a hip and knee reconstruction and joint replacement fellowship at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) of Cornell University in New York City. Through his fellowship, Dr. Bawa received extensive training in primary and complex hip and knee replacement surgery, and his specialized area of focus is in treating patients with arthritis and other degenerative joint conditions of the hip and knee.
