Dr. Jaime Hernandez to Perform First Surgery of Its Kind in the US
On Sept. 3, Dr. Jaime Hernandez will perform the nation’s first CORI robotic-assisted total knee replacement in an outpatient ambulatory surgery center. Dr. Hernandez will perform the groundbreaking procedure at The Center for Orthopedic Surgery at Southern California Orthopedic Institute’s Van Nuys office at 6815 Noble Ave., Suite 400. Patients seeking specialized care for their joint pain are encouraged to call (818) 901-6600 to schedule a safe appointment with Dr. Hernandez at the practice’s Van Nuys office or in Valencia at 24051 Newhall Ranch Road, Building C.
Released just several weeks ago, the CORI robot from Smith & Nephew delivers the latest in software, patient-specific operative planning and robotic-assisted surgery for joint replacement. While geared for minimally invasive surgery, the hand-held CORI robot and surgical system have not been used in an ambulatory surgery center in the United States until now.
Using CORI, Dr. Hernandez will be able to offer his patients the following benefits for partial and total knee replacement:
- Reduced cost due to no overnight stay.
- Reduced overall recovery time due to minimized disruption to structures surrounding the knee and protection of undamaged bone.
- Reduced time in surgery and reduced time under anesthesia.
- Imaging-free preoperative planning (no CT scans or MRI necessary, meaning less radiation) with 3D digital modeling of each patient’s unique knee anatomy.
- Real-time surgical planning and optimized implant alignment and balancing for more accuracy and efficiency during surgery to deliver better overall outcomes.
“Dr. Hernandez’s upcoming procedure will serve as another great leap in the technological advancement of knee replacement for patients around the country,” says Managing Director Dr. Paul Simic. “At Southern California Orthopedic Institute, we are committed to innovation to offer our patients and orthopedic patients everywhere the very best, and together, we want to congratulate Dr. Hernandez on his achievement and continued dedication to his patients and our field of medicine.”
