Are Sports Drinks Necessary?
Everyone’s first thought when working out is that they need water after they work out. Your main goal is to rehydrate—but is water truly enough to replenish your body with the nutrients it actually needs? At, Southern California Orthopedic Institute, we do care if you are keeping hydrated after working out.
Sports drinks actually are a necessity. Sports drinks have electrolytes, including sodium, to help your body rehydrate. If you are working out for longer than an hour, a sports drink, in addition to water, will help your body. For less intense activities, water alone is what you need.
The key to avoiding dehydration is drinking water before, during, and after a workout, and adding a sports drink after your workout will help replenish your body’s nutrients. As an added benefit, they taste a whole lot better than water too.
