
Abiram Bala, MD

As a Harvard- and Stanford-trained adult reconstructive orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Bala specializes in the treatment of hip and knee arthritis through minimally invasive and rapid-recovery techniques. Dr. Bala has extensive training in anterior hip replacement, custom joint replacement, technology-driven joint replacement, partial knee replacement, and revision joint replacement. Dr. Bala has a specific focus on personalized joint replacement, using surgical techniques, protocols, and implants that are tailored to the patient
Dr. Bala was born and raised in California and graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and with honors from the University of California, Berkeley. He then attended Duke University for medical school, where he was elected into the highly selective Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, reserved for the top students of the graduating class. He returned home to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at Stanford, where he received numerous awards and trained under many of the nation’s top surgeons and thought leaders. He then completed his training by pursuing a fellowship in complex hip and knee replacement at Harvard Medical School, Brigham, and Women’s Hospital, refining his surgical techniques under the guidance of world-renowned surgeons.
An active member of the orthopedic community, Dr. Bala maintains memberships in the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has a passion for innovating and contributing to the field. He has published/presented over 100 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, textbook chapters, and surgical techniques. In addition to these academic pursuits, Dr. Bala is involved in the design process for medical devices and has worked with novel surgical start-up companies. The combination of his training and his dedication to the field of orthopedics enables him to provide the best care for his patients.
Having had so many family members undergo joint replacement, Dr. Bala has seen firsthand the positive impact it has had on their lives. His treatment philosophy revolves around caring for each patient as if they were his own family, dedicating his efforts to both surgical and non-surgical treatment to help them achieve the best possible results.
Dr. Bala likes to remain active and wants to help patients return to the activities they value most. When he is not seeing patients and operating, he enjoys weight lifting, skiing, surfing, and spending time with his family.
