Fellowship-Trained Sports Medicine Surgeon
Dr. Michael Bahk graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in English studies. Within his English studies, he was selected to participate in a select writing major and was ultimately awarded the Edwin L. Shuman Essay Award and graduated summa cum laude. He was also a part of the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME) and attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated as one of the top in his class with Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) distinctions. He was also awarded the American Academy of Neurology Award for Excellence in Neurological Science upon graduation.
Dr. Bahk subsequently completed his internship and orthopedic residency training at one of the nation's top hospitals, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He worked for five years under some of the country's leading surgeons. While at Johns Hopkins, he gained extensive training in pediatric orthopedics and adolescent sports medicine. He helped take care of NCAA Division I athletes on the Johns Hopkins lacrosse team as well as professional athletes on the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. He has published numerous papers in journals such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, and Journal of Knee Surgery.
After residency, Dr. Bahk completed a sports medicine fellowship at Southern California Orthopedic Institute and trained under some of the nation's founding and pioneering arthroscopic surgeons. He continued to write book chapters and present research at national meetings such as the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) in addition to covering local high school sports teams.
Given the complexity of the shoulder and elbow, Dr. Bahk wished to expand his understanding of these joints and completed a second fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University. This was a one-year dedicated program in arthroscopic and open surgery of the shoulder and elbow, including shoulder and elbow replacements, fracture care, and tendon transfers. He worked with world-renown shoulder and elbow surgeons and was a recipient of a $45,000 Orthopaedic Research and Education Fund (OREF) grant to understand venous thromboembolic disease and upper extremity arthroplasty. He is excited about this research and hopes it will lead to better patient care.
Dr. Bahk grew up all over the nation, including New York, Michigan, Texas, and even briefly overseas. His parents still reside overseas, and his siblings live in New York and San Francisco. He appreciates his broad and diverse background growing up all over the world and training throughout the nation. He is excited to settle down in California and take care of patients in Thousand Oaks (Main Location), Simi Valley, and Van Nuys.
In his spare time, Dr. Bahk enjoys golfing, running, and spending time with family and friends.

"I sing Dr. Bahk's praises to everyone I know, just yesterday someone said they needed a second opinion about a shoulder injury and I piped up his name. Then I realized I had never officially rated him. So here I am. I give Dr. Bahk five stars!
I went to Dr. Bahk twice. Once when I broke my ankle in 3 places and he did the surgery. And once when I had a frozen shoulder. Orthopedic events are never fun. They take a while to heal and it can be really frustrating for the patient. But Dr. Bahk's kind nature and his orthopedic expertise saw me through both events. He thoroughly explained the options available to me and was very patient and answered all my questions. Currently, I am thankfully pain-free and able to walk and use my arm with no impediments. Thank you, Dr. Bahk.
P.S- You guys also have a lovely Van Nuys Physical Therapy Department." – Cynthia F.
